As you saw yesterday, a new Store launched on the site celebrating Dex. 😊
I’ve followed his Mom, Tia since 2017 if I wear to guess, and even though we never met in person, I just really loved following her and her family, on @mrsbrum plus her super cute shop @dexandbodie. Here’s an oldie, but goodie that Tia wrote and I thought tonight would be a great time to share it...
“I wasn’t sure how I should word this post. I’m still not sure if this is the right way to say it, but as an advocate for my son with special needs and kids like him, I humbly ask a little favor.
Parents, caregivers or any child that you may have influence over, please take just a few moments with your kids and share about children with special needs. You don’t have to go into tons of detail but maybe just acknowledge that there are some kids who are born with different abilities, to teach them not to be mean or make fun of them.
If they say Hi, it’s always ok to say Hi back. You don’t have to force your kids to play with kids like Dex, there is absolutely no obligation to do so, but just simply teaching your kiddos to be kind goes a long way.
This evening at the park, a young boy and girl were not at all nice to Dex. The girl asked him why was he sitting with her - quite rudely, and I promptly just moved him away from her.
Then the boy blocked him on the slide and told him that spot was his and then asked him “can you even talk” while laughing. Of course this is when I intervened and politely told him about Dex and asked if he would be kind. Thankfully the kid smiled and said yes.
I can’t judge the parents, because I am not even near perfect myself. Yes, they were standing there, heard everything and did nothing - BUT maybe it was simply because they didn’t know what to say or how to say it. So, I thought this would be a great teachable moment.
This isn’t a post to make anyone feel bad at all or to make you feel sorry for us- it’s just a great moment to talk to your kids about something you may not have thought of.” 🖤 - @mrsbrum
